Pudgy Pies
I spent most of my life having never experienced the magic of a pudgy pie, and in fact had never heard of them. On our first RV camping trip, Greg introduced me to this culinary wonder. If you have never had one, I suggest you immediately go purchase some pudgy pie irons and get started! The pie irons are cast iron so you will want to season them with oil just like other cast iron pans. This will help them stay in good condition and last longer. You should also spray with cooking oil or rub with butter prior to cooking to keep food from sticking. Pudgy pies only take a minute to assemble, then you can kick back and rest the irons over the campfire until they are toasty and melty. The basic instructions for making them are the same, as listed here, but individual recipes may differ slightly:
- Spray pie iron with oil or rub with butter
- Place one piece of dough or buttered bread into iron
- Add toppings
- Cover toppings with second piece of dough/buttered bread
- Close iron and hold or set iron flat over fire
- Check every few minutes and flip when ready to cook other side
- When finished, remove pie iron to a hot pad or other protected surface. Use caution when handling hot pie iron, and always use an oven mitt just in case of accidental contact with the iron. Open pie iron and flip sandwich out onto plate.
