5 Favorite Campfire Pie Iron Recipes (Pudgy Pies)

Favorite Recipes for a Perfect Campout

It’s not camping without pudgy pies, and these are some of our favorite tried and true recipes! So easy and fun to make, a complete meal can be conjured up in a pudgy pie iron, and it’s fun to sit around the fire while it’s cooking. We have had entire days in which we only ate pudgy pies for all three meals, and even had pudgy pie desserts.

Get the Pudgy Gear

You’ll need a pie iron for each person, or one or more “double” pie irons. We have one of each kind – square single, round single, and a double / rectangular iron. Make sure to get cast iron and not aluminum; these will stand up to years of heavy use, and are healthier to use than aluminum or non-stick pans.

We are using Camp Chef brand pans. Greg has had some of these for years!

The Pudgy Basics

Though the ingredients and cooking time vary, the method is the same! For more information and recipes, go to New Life RV.

  1. Spray pie iron with oil or rub with butter
  2. Place one piece of dough or buttered bread into iron
  3. Add toppings
  4. Cover toppings with second piece of dough/buttered bread
  5. Close iron and hold or set iron flat over fire
  6. Check every few minutes and flip when ready to cook other side
  7. When finished, remove pie iron to a hot pad or other protected surface. Use caution when handling hot pie iron, and always use an oven mitt just in case of accidental contact with the iron. Open pie iron and flip sandwich out onto plate.
